Abtswinder shield

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abtswinder Schild is a large location in the Franconian wine-growing region . It includes vineyards in the western Steigerwald and its foreland around Abtswind in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen . It is part of the Schwanberger Land and Steigerwald Wine Panorama areas .

Geographical location and geology

The vineyards of the major location Abtswinder Schild stretch along the Steigerwaldanstieges in the east of the Kitzingen district. In the south, the vineyards around Castell form the boundary, while Abtswind is centrally located. In the north, the Kirchschönbacher Mariengarten forms the end some distance from the other vineyards in the extreme east of the Prichsenstadt municipality. Originally, the sites of the large site belonged to the Steigerwald area, since 2017 they have been part of the Schwanberger Land and Steigerwald Wine Panorama areas .

Overall, the large area takes up an area of about 100 hectares . This makes it one of the medium-sized large locations within the cultivation area. In terms of nature, the Abtswinder Schild is located in the Steigerwald and its foreland . Most locations can be clearly assigned to the natural area of the Hoher or Northern Steigerwald, only in the far west is the Schwanberg foreland . The soils are dominated by the Keuper , in some cases gypsum admixtures are typical in the more southern Casteller locations. Loam predominates around Kirchschönbach .

Origin of name

The name of the large location goes back to an elevation on the edge of the Steigerwald, the so-called Schildsberg. As early as 1928, the name "Im Schild" appeared as the name of a single vineyard around Abtswind, which was added to the new single vineyard Abtswinder Altenberg after 1971 when a new wine law came into force. The Schildsberg, immediately west of the better-known Friedrichsberg , forms the geographical center of the large location and perhaps also points to the transition from the Steigerwald to the Steigerwald foreland, where all the individual layers are located.

Vineyards

The list of vineyards is based on a list of all Bavarian vineyards, which was published by the government of Lower Franconia . It is arranged alphabetically. In the second column the markings of the vineyards are noted. The areas of the vineyards are also listed. The nature of the soil and its predominant composition can be seen in the geology column . Notes contain important historical key points on the individual locations. The Abtswinder shield comprises five individual layers. Several layers extend over several districts, whereby the vines are often concentrated in one district (example Casteller Kirchberg, Greuther Kirchberg). However, the vineyards can be assigned much more clearly than those of the surrounding large areas. The geographic coordinate refers to the largest part of the respective location. The Casteller Bausch and Casteller Kirchberg vineyards are partially free of large vineyards.
