Abu Bakar Apong
Abu Bakar Apong (born September 19, 1948 ) (full name Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Haji Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong ) is a Brunei politician. He is a member of the Legislative Council and has been Minister of the Interior since 2015 . Before that, he held other ministerial posts, including education, communication and health.
Life
education
Abu Bakar received his education at Malaya University , where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1972 . He received a Master of Arts degree from Lancaster University in 1980 .
Career
Initially, Abu Bakar worked as an education officer . In 1974 he was a teacher and was promoted to headmaster of the Maktab Melayu Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan . In 1975 he was appointed Head of Planning, Research and Guidance in the Education Department for five years. In 1980 he was appointed Head of Training Unit in the Position Office. A year later he worked as a Senior Administrative Officer in the Sultan's General Office until 1984.
Soon after Brunei gained independence on January 1, 1984, Abu Bakar was appointed Director of Education . A year later he was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Deputy Vice-Chancellor) of the University of Brunei Darussalam and in the same year he became Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office (until 1991).
In 1991 he was appointed Vice-Chancellor at the University of Brunei Darussalam and in 1999 Permanent Secretary (Professional) in the Ministry of Education.
In 2002, Abu Bakar was appointed as a member of the Brunei Cabinet Minister by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah . His first role was as Minister of Health. On May 24, 2005, he succeeded Zakaria Sulaiman as Minister of Communications . After 5 years he was appointed Minister of Education (May 29, 2010) to succeed Abdul Rahman Mohamed Taib .
He was appointed Minister of Home Affairs on October 22, 2015 and reappointed in January 2018 after a cabinet reshuffle.
