Abysmal Growls of Despair is a dark ambient and funeral doom band founded in 2013 .

history

Abysmal Growls of Despair is a solo project by the French musician 'Hangsvart'. 'Hangsvart', who is active in metal and post-industrial bands and projects such as Arrant Saudade , Plagueprayer , Caelum Natus Ex Mortuus , Low Cave Sounds , Catacombed , Ursus Horribilis or Ancient Lament in addition to Abysmal Growls of Despair , began his own statements Episode 2007 after  suffering from schizophreniawas diagnosed with writing music. Abysmal Growls of Despair is considered to be his oldest and most active project. It has released a large number of albums since 2013, sometimes several within a year. Here 'Hangsvart' cooperated with companies such as Frozen Light Records , Silent Time Noise , Satanath Records and GS Productions . In addition, Abysmal Growls of Despair took part in split releases with The Cold View , Until My Funerals Began and In Lacrimaes et Dolor .

reception

The publications of the project received mostly positive reviews. In particular, the split album with The Cold View , released via Frozen Lights, received widespread attention and was highly praised. Early albums such as the debut Eternal Lament from 2013, Dark Days and Lovecraftian Drone from 2014, the 2015 Between my Dead and the already mentioned 2015 cooperation with The Cold View Songs of Deepest Skies received frequent reviews. Later publications such as Worst Putrid Tongue from 2016 or Sentir le Poids des Montagnes et Trouver la Paix Dans les Ténèbres from 2019 received less attention. Some of the self-published albums and EPs , which were mostly available for download via Bandcamp , were not received. Only a few publications received negative ratings.

style

The music of Abysmal Growls of Despair is mainly attributed to Funeral Doom, but isolated releases correspond to the Dark Ambient. The webzine Doom-Metal.com describes the music of the project as very dark and desolate. His early releases compare his to Mistress of the Dead , but the style of Abysmal Growls of Despair has evolved into a more atmospheric and booming variant of Ambient Funeral Doom . As such, a review of the webzine Metaltalks.de compares the music descriptively with The Cold View : “Both artists use the same elements to bring darkness and despair to the songs. With extremely deep growls , repetitive sound elements and heavily distorted guitar riffs , these negative feelings sometimes manifest themselves so strongly in the listener that they can almost be grasped. This is reinforced by clear, acoustic guitar parts [.] ”Similarly,  Between My Dead , with a bad rating, was described for Crossfire-Metal.de:“ Overdriven, bass-heavy music and ultra-slow tempo make the impression of listening to a 7 ”EP to 33 instead of 45 revolutions. The deep growling singing also consolidates this thesis. "
