Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures (AMMP), or Oscar Museum for short , is currently under construction in Los Angeles . The museum is scheduled to open in December 2020. The sponsor is the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences . The building was designed by Pritzker Prize winner Renzo Piano and will contain a total of around 28,000 m² of exhibition, cinema and retail space. It is located on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, on the Los Angeles Museum Mile . The AMMP consists of two structures, the previous May Company Building , a prime example of streamlined modernism that is being completely renovated, and a sphere with a terrace that opens up a view of the Hollywood Hills .

May Company Building

May Company Building, 1939

The building was built in 1939 as a department store for the May Company California , designed by Albert C. Martin, Sr., a famous architect at the time who also planned and built the Million Dollar Theater and Los Angeles City Hall . It is listed as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument . The distinctive cylindrical structure at the southwest corner - in gold - was considered the building's landmark. In January 1993 the department store ceased operations, in 1994 the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) acquired the building and used it as an additional LACMA West exhibition space. In the 2010s the building was rededicated and is now being fundamentally restored and reconstructed. The couple Cheryl and Haim Saban donated $ 50 million to the museum project. In her honor, the May Company Building will in future be called the Saban Building . The Saban Building will also include the Ted Mann Theater with 288 seats, which the Simms / Mann Family Foundation is equipping in honor of Ted Mann .

Sphere building

On the north side, the new sphere connects to the existing building wing. Renzo Piano Building Workshop and M. Arthur Gensler Jr. & Associates, Inc. are responsible for the structurally demanding structure in the form of a spaceship. The wing and the sphere are connected by two largely transparent bridges. The sphere has a terrace with a view of the Hollywood Hills , on which the famous Hollywood sign is located. The building represents the connection between art and technology and contains a cinema with 1,000 seats. The demonstration facilities are partially outsourced in the form of a box and are crowned by a non-functional antenna. Film premieres and charity events are also planned. David Geffen donated $ 25 million to the museum project. The new cinema will be named David Geffen Theater in his honor .

Collections

The future museum promises "unique experiences and insights into films and filmmaking". The academy has been collecting film-related materials since the 1930s and is now considered the world's most important collection for cinema history. The permanent collection includes over 12 million photographs, 190,000 video documents, 80,000 scripts, 61,000 posters and over 104,000 objects from film production. The most important objects in the museum include Dorothy's ruby-red slippers from The Wizard of Oz , the tablets of the Law from the Ten Commandments or the last completely preserved model of the shark from Spielberg's Jaws, as well as the typewriter on which the screenplay for Psycho was written.

Supporters and Board of Trustees

The project's supporters include prominent representatives from the industry such as Steven Spielberg , Jeffrey Katzenberg and George Lucas . The board of trustees, the highest administrative body of the museum, includes John Bailey , Tom Hanks , Diane von Fürstenberg , Kathleen Kennedy and Kimberly Steward .

Funding needs are estimated at $ 388 million, to be obtained from donated funds. In June 2019, only $ 281 million of this was secured.
