Acanthobasidium phragmitis ( syn. Aleurodiscus phragmitis ) is a type of mushroom from the family of layer mushroom relatives (Stereaceae). The mushroom is also called reed flour disk .
features
The corticoid fruit bodies are very thin and delicate and colored white to pale ocher brown. The hyphae system is monomitic . The generative hyphae are 2–3.5 µm wide and have buckles . The outline is irregular. The gloeocystids are hyaline or contain few, oily, yellowish droplets. They are 20–50 µm long and 5.5–14 µm wide and are cylindrical or constricted like a pearl necklace and often teat-shaped at the tip. The clubbed to bulbous or at the tip enlarged acanthohyphids are numerous and measure 18–30 µm × 7–8 µm. They have clear growths up to 2.5 µm long and later develop into basidia . Hence the name Acanthobasidium was coined for them. The basidia are 35–40 µm long and 9–11 µm wide and carry 4 to 12 µm long sterigms . The 11-14 microns long and 5.5-7 microns wide Basidio spores are ellipsoidal and highly ornamented warty.
Species delimitation
The species can be recognized by its substrate, the warty basidiospores and the acanthobasidia. Acanthobasidium norvegicum is very similar, but its basidia have only two sterigms and very few outgrowths. With Acanthobasidium phragmitis the outgrowths are very numerous, especially in the lower central part of the basidia.
Ecology and diffusion
The mushroom grows on reeds and bamboo. It has been identified in Spain, France, England and Argentina, but may have been overlooked in other countries and on other continents.
meaning
The mushroom is inedible.
