The mill has a height of 18 meters to the top of the cap. The diameter of the wing cross is 22 meters. It has two grinding stages, a machine grinding stage, a Peldegang and a roller mill .

history

Today's Accumer Mill was built in 1746 by the mill builders Wiebrand Ehmen and Hinrich Hinrichs. It replaced an old post windmill that was a bit outside of Accum when it came to the pickling . In 1746 Accum belonged to the Varel and Kniphausen rule . As can be seen from the founding stone of the mill, the then sovereign Charlotte Sophie von Bentinck , née Aldenburg , took over the patronage:

“You are right, here you do not see a mass reaching the dimensions of the proudly boasting Egyptian pyramids, but a millstone that towers above it in usefulness. I was established under the patronage of Countess Charlotte Sophie von Bentinck, née. Countess of Aldenburg, mistress of Varel, Kniphausen and Dorwerth, 1746 AD. "

- Translation of the Latin inscription of the founding stone from 1746

At first the mill did not have a compass rose, but a codend , which was replaced by the compass rose in 1890. In 1962 the mill was still completely intact and was already being operated by the third generation of the Leerhoff family. During the storm surge in 1962 and other storms, the mill was badly damaged and had to be extensively repaired. In the summer of 1977, the Schortens local history association began to maintain the mill. With financial support from the municipality of Schortens, the district of Friesland and the Oldenburg landscape, the wings, drive wheels, the foundation, the louvre flaps, parapet walls as well as doors and windows were renewed. In 1986 the mill was sold by the Leerhoff family to the municipality of Schortens and has been owned by the municipality or city since then. In the summer of 1987, the Accumer Mühle working group of the Schortens Heimatverein was founded. In 1988 the barn belonging to the mill was extensively renovated and the bakery was built in the summer of 1990.

After the renovation of the barn and the construction of the bakery, the mill itself was again the focus of interest and so in 1990 the two upper floors of the mill were completely renewed. In the fall of 1991, work began on the cap, for this purpose the wings were removed and the cap from the mill was removed. The work on the cap was completed in the summer of 1992 and in September 1992 the cap and wings could be re-mounted on the mill. In 1993 the floor of the flour floor was renewed, further repair work was carried out and the main grinding aisle and the elevator were overhauled. The thatched cladding in the upper part of the mill was also completely replaced. On December 15, 1993, the Accumer Mühle e. V. founded as an independent association. The mill was officially opened at Pentecost 1994. In 1995, the work on the second grinding stage was completed and this was put into operation in September 1995.

In 2007 the mill was equipped with new blades and the oven in the bakery was replaced.

Right next to the mill is the barn, which was built in 1846 and extensively renovated between 1988 and 1989. Today the barn is used for cultural events and celebrations of all kinds and is operated by the association. The barn was renovated as part of a job creation measure by the Wilhelmshaven employment office and the Schortens community.

The bakery, equipped with a tunnel oven, is located behind the barn and was built by the working group from May to September 1990 under its own responsibility.
