Acharavi ( Greek Αχαράβη ( f. Sg. )) Is a former fishing village and today's holiday area in the north of the island of Corfu , about 36 kilometers from the island's capital.
history
Acharavi was probably called Ivi in ancient times ( ancient Greek Ἥβη = Hebe , goddess of youth). The Romans under Octavian (later Emperor Augustus ) destroyed in 31 BC The settlement and killed all the young people because their inhabitants had fought on the side of Mark Antony and Cleopatra in the Battle of Actium . The place was then called "joyless youth" - in Greek achari ivi . The escape route of the residents to the mountains at that time has been partially preserved to this day.
tourism
The resort has developed very elongated on the coast and has no larger center or special sights. You will mainly find smaller hotels, apartment complexes and holiday homes. There are plenty of shops, taverns, cafes, restaurants and a few discos provide entertainment; the big hustle and bustle has so far stayed away from the place.
Beach
The attraction of the place is the seven kilometers long, quite wide and gently sloping sand-pebble beach, which has been preserved as a well-kept natural beach and offers all water sports. The green, hilly to mountainous and still largely original hinterland with the more than 900 meters high mountain range of the Pantokrator is interesting . Beaches around Acharavi have received the European Blue Flag several times due to their cleanliness .
