Achimaʿats ben Palti'el ( Hebrew אֲחִימַעַץ בן פלטיאל, * 1017 in Capua ; † 1060 in Oria ) was a Jewish - liturgical poet and author of a valuable historical family chronicle.

Life

Achimaʿats was the offspring of a large family of scholars from Oria - his father worked as a doctor at the Lombard prince's court in Capua  - and wrote his family history in rhyming prose in the Megillat Achimaʿats ("Scroll of Achimaʿats") from the 9th century onwards. The period from 850 to 1054 is dealt with. His work is also an important source for the history of southern Italy, especially for the emirate of Bari .

Since his ancestors often played a leading role in the life of the Jewish communities, the small, but legendary script is also important as an early chronicle of Jewish life in the Middle Ages, especially as regards the relations between the Jewish communities of southern Italy and Palestine . He attributes the origins of the Jewish community in Oria and his own family to the Jewish prisoners who were deported to Italy by Titus after the Jewish War .
