Acmaeodera is a genus of the subfamily Polycestinae in the family of the borer (Buprestidae). The scientific name means that the "neck" (Gr .: dere), the pronotum , is "particularly well developed" (akmaios).

features

Of the related genera, Acmaeodera as well as Acmaeoderella is characterized by the absence of the scutellum , which has widened in the course of development and completely fused with the elytra. In contrast to Acmaeoderella , the body is less walnut, but slightly flattened, the hairs are not flattened and the lateral edge of the wing covers (epipleurs) are not cut out above the middle thigh, but only slightly edged.

All genera of the subfamily Polycestinae specialize in flowers. As beetles, they eat the petals. The larvae live in and feed on dead, mostly dry wood .

Systematics

With around 500 species worldwide, the Acmaeodera genus is one of the most species-rich jewel beetles. Some authors summarize the genus with Acmaeoderella .

In Europe, the genus Acmaeodera is represented with 57 species and subspecies, which are mainly native to southern Europe .

In Central Europe only the Acmaeodera degener species occurs.
