The Acrolepiidae are about 95 kinds comprehensive family of butterflies within the superfamily yponomeutoidea . The family is often classified as a subfamily of the round-fronted moths (Glyphipterigidae), then the taxon is referred to as Acrolepiinae . The family or subfamily occurs in Europe with 45 species and subspecies . It is distributed worldwide, with the main range being the Palearctic , where more than half of all species occur.
features
Like many species of the Plutellidae , the moths still have point eyes ( Ocelli ). The suspected autapomorphies include the construction of the male genitalia, in which the tegume , its processes and the gnathos have receded and the phallus is expanded at the base, as well as the branching of the veins M1 + M2 and M3 + CuA1 on the hind wings. The females lack the ventral costa at the base of the anterior apophysis, although this feature also occurs in some species of the Plutellidae from the southern hemisphere.
Way of life
The moths are crepuscular or nocturnal. The caterpillars are miners in leaves or drills in stems, buds and seeds. Some species, such as Acrolepiopsis assectella , are pests on the lily family (Liliaceae). The food spectrum of the caterpillars includes different dicotyledonous species , such as sunflower (Asteraceae), mint family (Lamiaceae) and nightshade family (Solanaceae).
Systematics
