Acrosin , also called acrosin in some publications , symbol ACR , is an enzyme from the peptidase family . The EC number is 3.4.21.10.

Occurrence

Acrosine is the major proteinase in the acrosome of mature sperm . It is a typical representative of the serine proteinases, with a specificity similar to trypsin . The inactivated precursor protein proacrosin is located in the acrosome . The active form of the enzyme causes the dissolution ( lysis ) of the zona pellucida , the protective covering of the egg cell . This allows the sperm to enter the egg.

Proacrosin is detectable for the first time in the haploid spermatids in the course of spermatogenesis .

The gene coding for the protein acrosine is located in humans on chromosome 22 gene locus q13.3.

Acrosine Associated Syndromes

A lack of acrosine, or proacrosine, leads to sterility in men .
