Act of War: Direct Action is a computer game that was released for Windows in mid-March 2005 . It belongs to the genre of real-time strategy games . The developer of this game is the French company Eugen Systems and the game was published by Atari . The rights to the game have been owned by the Swedish publisher THQ Nordic since 2018 .

action

The story of Act of War takes place around 2010 and comes from the pen of the American bestselling author Dale Brown . Since gasoline prices have risen during this period, crude oil suppliers are making billions. With part of their money they commission an internationally operating terrorist organization to carry out various attacks all over the world. So they want to collapse the world economy and drive up the price of fuel further. However, the American secret service learns of the terrorists' plans.

In the campaign , which includes 35 missions, the player takes on the role of Major Jason Richter and fights terror in numerous locations around the world with the Talon task force .

Game mechanics

Act of War also, but not exclusively, relies on the base structure common in the strategy genre. To produce a unit, you have to build the corresponding production building. The game contains approx. 60 real and futuristic combat units, all of which have specific weaknesses and strengths (example: when infantrymen entrench themselves on roofs of houses or in forests, their firepower increases). After each confrontation with the opponent, your own units gain experience. This will gradually make them stronger. In order to be able to produce units, the player needs money. The player receives this by mining oil, occupying banks or by capturing enemy fighters.

In addition to classic missions, Act of War lets the player play special missions in which he can only fall back on a small task force in order to bring the situation under control as quickly as possible. The missions consist of main and secondary objectives. If bonus objectives, such as freeing abducted police officers, are successfully completed, the player is rewarded with additional units. In Act of War , every building can be completely destroyed in order to take cover from the enemy. The game is lost if the hero Ray Jefferson falls in battle. The game status can be saved at any time.

The controls with mouse and keyboard can be adapted to the preferences of the player.

Act of War includes both a single player and a multiplayer online mode. In the multiplayer mode , the player can opt for the US Army with the "Talon" task force or for the so-called consortium . With the Americans, the player has access to special forces. The "Task Force Talon" as an anti-terrorist unit is suitable for house-to-house warfare and has experimental high-tech weapons, but - with the exception of drone technology - it has no heavy cavalry (tanks). The consortium (the Union of Terrorists), on the other hand, has a quantitative majority and has units of Russian origin.

technology

The game engine can be rotated freely and the player can continuously zoom into the action. The animations of the various units were very detailed at the time. The game also includes videos with real actors and cutscenes created using the game engine that reproduce the story. Many locations have been integrated into the game true to their real role models. For example, you can discover the White House or Buckingham Palace in the game.

The game has problems processing more than 3 gigabytes of system memory, which can lead to performance problems, crashes and errors when starting or playing. A working solution in the form of a patch or similar. on the part of the developer does not exist. Currently, the only possible way to fix the problem is to manually remove or limit the RAM to a maximum of 3 GB of RAM.

Act of War: High Treason (Add-on)

On March 29, 2006, the add-on Act of War: High Treason was published, which continues the story of Sergeant Major Ray Jefferson. It can not run without the base game Direct Action . A novelty in High Treason is the ability to command ships and hire mercenaries . The level of difficulty of "High Treason" has increased significantly compared to its predecessor. The game did not appear with German dialogues, but only with surtitles and only with animated cutscenes.

continuation

In 2015, Eugen Systems published the title Act of Aggression via Focus Home Interactive , which is commonly referred to as the spiritual successor. Atari sold the trademark rights to Act of War to the Swedish group THQ Nordic AB in September 2018 .
