Adriaan "Ad" Bax (* 1956 in Zevenbergen ) is a Dutch-American chemist . He is at the Chemical Physics Laboratory at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland .

Life

Bax studied at the TU Delft with a diploma in 1978 and a doctorate in 1981 on two-dimensional NMR techniques. During his PhD he was also in the Physical Chemistry Laboratory at Oxford University with Ray Freeman . He was a post-doctoral student at Colorado State University (National Solid State NMR Facility) with Gary Maciel. From 1983 he worked at the Laboratory for Chemical Physics at the NIH, where he has been head of the Biophysical NMR Spectroscopy Department since 1983 . In 2005 he became a Distinguished Investigator of the NIH.

Bax deals with NMR and its application in chemistry, biochemistry and biology and develops methods for the improved derivation of the three-dimensional structure of biological substances (proteins and RNA) from NMR data and investigated their dynamics with NMR.

At the end of the 1980s, he was a pioneer in triple-resonance experiments with NMR, in which the molecules to be examined are enriched with nitrogen-15 and carbon-13 isotopes.

Other methods developed by him and his group are based on chemical shift and residual dipole coupling, whereby the substances to be examined are dissolved in liquid crystal media, which has the effect that the dipole-dipole couplings no longer occur average away by rotational diffusion and so long-range orders in the molecule can be measured via NMR.

Using the techniques, he also investigated the structure and dynamics of proteins in membranes, for example hemagglutinin (influenza virus A) and Gp41 in HIV .

He is one of the most cited chemists in the world (he was among the Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates 2002-2005).

He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the National Academy of Sciences (2002), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2002) and a corresponding member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (1994). From 2006 to 2008 he was President of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance. In 2009 he received an honorary doctorate from the Free University of Brussels. In 2002 he received the Hans Neurath Award from the Protein Society, in 2003 the Glenn T. Seaborg Medal and he received the gold medal from the Dutch Chemical Society. For 2018 he was awarded the NAS Award for Scientific Reviewing and the Welch Award in Chemistry .
