Johann Adam Siepen (born June 8, 1851 in Düren , † January 27, 1904 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter who painted feet .

Life

Siepen was born with a disability on the Jesuitenhof near Düren as the son of the landowner Matthias Siepen . He had no arms and his right leg was missing the thigh, with the lower leg touching the pelvis. He used his left foot for daily chores.

Düren's dean Vaaßen, a sponsor of the Mother of God House, recognized Siepen's artistic talent early on . After his first drawings in Düren, he wanted to go to the Düsseldorf Academy of Painting . From 1871 he studied there in the painting class of Julius Roeting and Andreas Müller . He then moved to the Dresden Art Academy in 1878 and to the Munich Art Academy in 1880 , before settling in Düsseldorf in 1886 and moving into an apartment in the house of the painter Carl Jungheim's widow .

Siepen mainly painted portraits for customers in Germany , Spain and the USA . He specialized in portraits of gypsies . It is interesting that sat on a low dais in front of the easel . Without a mallatte, he painted at large. With the only foot he had, he even mixed his own colors. He opened and closed the tubes with the calf of his right leg. So he was completely self-sufficient when painting. Despite his disability, Siepen sketched, caricatured and drew with incredible attention to detail.

His home in Düsseldorf at Immermannstrasse 12, which he shared with his brother and servant “Famulus Kaspar”, was called “Kloster zu Adamia”.

Image of Mary in Düren

Around 1880 he created one of his few pictures with a religious content, namely a portrait of Our Lady with the naked baby Jesus . It was first privately owned and then placed in the old Mother of God house in Düren, and later in the new chapel at the altar . In 1895 he restored his own picture.

In October 2006 the picture was carried in a procession for renovation to the nearby church of St. Joseph and there enclosed in a winged shrine that is opened on feast days. The Consolatrix picture has meanwhile been cleaned and restored by the Cologne restorer Andrea Ollendorf. At the beginning of the pilgrimage season of every year on April 30th, the picture of the Consolatrix Afflictorum is transferred to the Madonna's house by the Josephs Schützen; At the end of the pilgrimage season on October 31st each year, it is brought back to the Church of St. Joseph in a translatio light procession .
