Adam Solski

Adam Solski (born January 4, 1895 in Milatycze , Austria-Hungary , † April 9, 1940 in Katyn ) was a Polish professional soldier, victim of the Katyn massacre and author of a later published diary.

Life

He was born as the son of Marian and Maria. Wantałowicz was born. In the First World War he was a soldier in the Austrian army . He then fought in the Polish-Soviet War .

After the German invasion of Poland in 1939, he was captured by the Red Army as a major in the Polish Army . By decision of the Soviet leadership under Josef Stalin , the majority of the captured Polish officers were murdered in 1940, a total of over 20,000 people. Around 4,400 Polish prisoners from the Koselsk camp, the overwhelming majority of them officers, were shot in the neck in the Katyn forest in April 1940 . Adam Solski was among them. After the war he became known through his diary from the Koselsk prison camp, which was found during the exhumation in 1943 and later by Józef Mackiewiczhas been published. The diary was also presented on Radio Free Europe .

Adam Solski was married to Anna Leontyna Trojanowska (1906–1970) and had one daughter. He was u. a. awarded the Virtuti Militari and the Cross of the Brave.

In 2007 Adam Solski was posthumously promoted to lieutenant colonel.
