Adam David Tanner (born October 25, 1973 in Maldon ) is a former English football player . The versatile player spent a large part of his professional career at Ipswich Town .

Career

Tanner came to Ipswich Town in 1990 as a trainee and received his first professional contract in the summer of 1992, before the Premier League began. In the following two seasons, Tanner remained without a competitive game, in addition to occasional appointments to the bench, he was mostly active for the reserve team. Tanner made his debut in the 1994/95 season when he contributed to a 4-1 win against Leicester City on January 2, 1995 with a goal that was voted Goal of the Year by the club's supporters. On the following match day, a 1-0 win over Liverpool FC - the first win at Anfield Road in the history of Ipswich Town - he distinguished himself as a goalscorer. Despite the two successes, the season ended for Ipswich as bottom of the table far from the non-relegation places.

In the following seasons, Tanner, whose strengths were a powerful shot and long, precise passes into the attack line, increasingly gained a reputation as a versatile player who could be used in central defense, in central midfield or in defensive outer positions. This flexibility made him a popular option on the bench, but at the same time prevented him from establishing himself in the regular team. In January 1997, it was revealed that Tanner tested positive for cocaine in a December 1996 doping test , following which he was given a three-month ban by the Football Association . The club refrained from terminating the contract and Tanner made his comeback on the last day of the 1996/97 season. In the following seasons, he continued to play supplementary, from April 1999 he suffered from a knee injury, which further reduced his chances of playing. In November 1999, he made headlines again when he was under the influence of alcohol and rammed a parked vehicle and then hit a hit. He admitted his guilt in court and was sentenced in February 2000 to twelve months probation, a three-year driving ban and 80 hours of community service. In March 2000, he left Ipswich on a free transfer and moved to fourth division Peterborough United , but was not used for the club until his departure at the end of the season.

In the summer break of 2000 he came to the third division Colchester United , with whom he was already in contact before moving to Peterborough, but his engagement there ended after only a few sporadic appearances in January 2001. Tanner then joined the championship candidate FC Canvey Island in the sixth grade Isthmian League . With Canvey he won the FA Trophy in May 2001 by a 1-0 win over Forest Green Rovers , after Canvey Island had prevailed in the course of the competition against five higher-class clubs, Tanner was substituted in in the final in the closing stages. The league finished the club in second place behind Farnborough Town and thus missed promotion to the Football Conference . In February 2002 Tanner left the club again, nothing is known about other club stations.
