Green Longhorn is a diurnal butterfly from the family of adelidae (Adelidae) and in Central Europe the most frequently encountered Adelidenart.

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 14 to 18 millimeters. The males have long, whitish antennae that are about three times as long as the wings. In females, they are significantly shorter and reach about 1.5 times the wing length. The forewings of both sexes are bronze or metallic green. The hind wings are black and shimmering purple.

The caterpillars are yellowish and have a dark brown neck shield.

distribution

Adela reaumurella is widespread in southern Northern Europe, from Western Europe through Central to Eastern Europe. In the south the species occurs to Sicily and Anatolia , it is absent on the Iberian Peninsula. In Asia the distribution area extends to Japan .

biology

The information about the flight times of the moths range from the end of March to June. The males form swarms of up to 30 specimens on sunny forest edges, which prance around the branches of beech ( Fagus ), oak ( Quercus ), maple ( Acer ), ash ( Fraxinus ) and other deciduous trees. Leaves and twigs are flown around from the lower region to the top of the tree. During the flight the long antennae are pointed steeply upwards and backwards. The females do not swarm, but live hidden in the shrub layer. The moths mate in flight when a female approaches a flock of males. The common flight during copulation is only short-lived, after which the moths settle in the ground vegetation.

In spring the caterpillars live in the litter layer in a brown sack made from withered leaf components, where they pupate after the winter. The caterpillar sac is long and narrow, arched biconvex and pear-shaped. The caterpillars feed on both dead and living leaf material, which comes mainly from beech and oak as well as various other hardwoods.
