Adelquis Remón Gay
Adelquis Remón Gay (born January 21, 1949 in Cuatro Caminos-La Caridad, today part of the Municipio Rafael Freyre , Cuba ; † November 15, 1992 on Mount Pico Isabel de Torres near Puerto Plata , Dominican Republic ) was a Cuban chess player .
He learned to play chess at the Holguín Chess Academy . In 1978 he was allowed to represent Cuba at the zone tournament in Ecuador. He took second place in its group with five wins, six drawn games and one defeat and was awarded the title of International Master . From 1976 to 1992 he took part regularly in the Capablanca Memorial , which he won in May 1990 in Havana at the 23rd edition of this tournament. Here he reached a grandmaster norm. His highest Elo rating he had with 2,470 in January 1991st
On his return flight from his third international tournament, he had an accident in a plane crash on the way back to Cuba. He had participated in a chess tournament of the ISLA (Instituto Superior Latinoamericano de Ajedrez) in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. The return flight which crashed charter plane on the mountain Pico Isabel de Torres before a stopover during landing approach to the airport of Puerto Plata . A total of 34 people were killed. A chess tournament is held annually in Holguín in his honor.
