Monument to Konrad Adenauer on Adenauerplatz

The swiveling of north-south traffic from Wilmersdorfer Strasse to the newly created Lewishamstrasse, which runs across the historic street grid in a north-northeastern direction to the Charlottenburg train station , resulted in a small triangular square with an acute angle pointing to Kurfürstendamm and the 1973 was named after the former German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer . In 1974 the square was redesigned to its present form in the course of the construction of a road tunnel. In 2005 a 1.85 meter high bronze statue of the namesake was unveiled by Angela Merkel on the north side of the square. It comes from the artist Helga Tiemann .

Due to the urban planning concept of the “ car-friendly city ” in the 1960s, which in some cases resulted in radical redesigns of grown residential areas, Adenauerplatz was a by-product of these plans.

The fountain sculpture Pillar in the Surf by Brigitte and Martin Matschinsky-Denninghoff is located in the center of the square . Also on Adenauerplatz, a memorial stone commemorates Mete Ekşi , who died on November 13, 1991 of serious injuries sustained here in a violent confrontation between Berlin youths of different origins. At the corner of Kurfürstendamm 70 and Lewishamstrasse stands the narrowest office building in Berlin, the so-called " Towel House ". It was built from 1992 to 1994 by the architect Helmut Jahn .

The BVG underground station of the same name is located under the square . At the same time, a road tunnel in a north-south direction crosses Kurfürstendamm and Adenauerplatz. A large part of the through traffic from Brandenburgische / Lewishamstrasse is diverted from the square and the intersection with Kurfürstendamm.
