The gas turbine ship Adm.Wm.M.Callaghan was the first new build of a cargo ship equipped with gas turbines . She was built in 1967 by Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. in Chester , Pennsylvania , United States , for Sunexport Holdings Corp. built and chartered to the Military Sea Transport Service , the military sea transport of the US Navy , which probably made the operation of such a new type of vehicle possible in the first place.
The namesake William M. Callaghan
The twin-screw ship Adm.Wm.M.Callaghan was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney FT4 aircraft turbines, each with 18,375 kW, which had been converted for on-board operation. She reached a speed of 25.5 knots and thus held the speed record for cargo ships on the Atlantic for two years. In contrast to the conventional RoRo ship , the Adm.Wm.M.Callaghan was built as a trailer ship, which means a minimum height of 4.20 meters per deck. The ship is still part of the US Navy standby fleet.
Loading space arrangement
The Adm.Wm.M.Callaghan has five smooth deck hatches with access to the cargo space with five trailer decks with 15,330 m² deck area a 4.5 m high, which can be reached via a 12.8 meter wide and 5.5 meter high straight stern ramp . There are also two 4.6 × 4.0 meter side gates available for cargo handling. The RORO area has an internal ramp system. For conventional loading and unloading operations, there are twelve 15 ton cargo booms and two 120 ton heavy cargo booms on deck , which can also be driven coupled.
