Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration administrator is the head of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the United States' space agency . He is also the space science advisor to the President of the United States .
The first NASA administrator was Thomas Keith Glennan in 1958 . Before NASA was founded, the various government research and development projects in space travel were divided between different bodies. One of his first tasks was therefore to unite them under the new authority.
Daniel Goldin has held the post for the longest time at over nine and a half years. The only person to hold the position twice was James C. Fletcher , who returned to NASA after the Challenger disaster .
The longest serving acting assistant administrator was John R. Dailey , who took the position after his retirement from the United States Marine Corps . The longest deputy administrator was Hugh Latimer Dryden , NASA's first ever deputy administrator. William R. Graham and Frederick D. Gregory held the position of deputy administrator twice, and were each acting administrator in between. Daniel Mulville was twice acting deputy administrator and acting administrator in between.
