AIR (short for English Adobe Integrated Runtime , often Adobe Air called) is one of Adobe Inc. developed platform-independent runtime environment that enables web applications like locally installed application software to use and thus the benefits of both a Rich Internet Application (RIA ) connect to. AIR applications can be installed and started directly from the World Wide Web and, like locally installed application software, can be executed independently on the local computer without a web browser . While the Internet is the primary distribution medium for AIR-based applications, the application's dependence on an Internet connection depends on its function.

Version 1.0 of AIR was released in January 2008. In May 2019, Adobe announced that it would stop developing AIR with version 32.0 and support the platform until the end of 2020. At the same time it announced the creation and maintenance of a successor version 33.0 by Harman International .

With Adobe Flex, AIR is to form the platform for the development of RIAs that support Adobe formats such as Flash and PDF . AIR and Flex are based on Flash, while PDF is an embedded format. HTML and JavaScript can be used cooperatively.

The operating systems Android , Blackberry Tablet OS , Blackberry 10 , iOS , macOS and Windows are currently supported.

Microsoft Silverlight , Mozilla Prism and JavaFX offer similar functions .

Range of functions

Using the Adobe Flex technology, Adobe provides a platform based on Adobe Flash with which applications for different areas of use can be developed. Due to the nature of the Adobe Flash Player as a plug-in for various browsers, the possibilities of the applications are often limited to what the browser allows, partly for security reasons.

Using the AIR API , software developers can add the following functionality to a Flex- based application:

AIR 2.0

AIR 2.0 brings the following new functions:

  • Improving accessibility
  • Multi-touch device support
  • Reduction of the CPU / RAM usage
  • Direct communication with audio devices
  • Better file management ("File Promises")
  • Deeper integration at the system level

AIR 2.5

Adobe AIR 2.5 was released on October 24, 2010 at Adobe MAX 2010 .

Linux support was discontinued with version 2.7.0.

application development

AIR applications can be developed using Adobe Dreamweaver , a command line-based text editor , Adobe Flash (version CS3 or higher), FlashBuilder or FDT .

Since the beginning of 2008, the Aptana Studio development environment , which is based on the Eclipse platform and available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, has also offered its own extension to support application development in AIR. However, support is primarily aimed at HTML and JavaScript developers.

IntelliJ IDEA also integrates AIR development.
