The Adolf Würth Center for the History of Psychology (AWZ) is a scientific institution of the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . It is used to collect contemporary testimonies and to research the history of psychology. The name of the facility came about through sponsorship by the Adolf Würth company .

The task of the Adolf Würth Center for the History of Psychology is to preserve the legacy of science and the subject of psychology, to develop it and thus to make it accessible for research. The collection continues to grow and is dependent on the support of all colleagues working in psychology, whether they are employed at universities or other institutions. A restorer permanently employed at the center ensures that the valuable equipment, documents, film, image and sound recordings and books are handled professionally in terms of conservation and restoration.

history

The collection on the history of psychology was founded by Werner Traxel in 1981 as part of the Institute for the History of Modern Psychology at the University of Passau . This included historical documents, apparatus and a series of publications on the history of psychology. From 1990 Horst Gundlach expanded this collection considerably and also made exhibitions and congresses possible.

In 2006, through the target agreements of the Free State of Bavaria as a result of the results of the Mittelstraß commission, the aim was to relocate the collection to the university town of Würzburg. The aim here should be to bundle the strengths of different university locations. As a result, the collection moved into a historic university building at Pleicherwall 1 in 2009 and was initially managed jointly by Horst Gundlach and Armin Stock for a year, before Armin Stock took over sole management after Horst Gundlach's retirement.

Since the opening of the Adolf Würth Center in 2009, several symposia, conferences and congresses as well as four exhibitions have been presented: In 2011 the conference of the specialist group for the history of psychology of the German Society for Psychology took place in the Adolf Würth Center and 2013 the congress of the European Society for the History of the Human Sciences (ESHHS). In 2015 a symposium was organized on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Ludwig J. Pongratz .

Until December 2012, the center presented itself with the exhibition: First Steps in Experimental Psychology, which was followed by the exhibition Hermann von Helmholtz - A Pioneer in Scientific Psychology . In 2015 the exhibition Carl Stumpf (1848–1936) and the beginnings of gestalt psychology were presented to the public. This was preceded by a donation from Carl Stumpf's estate to the Adolf Würth Center. In December 2017, the Adolf Würth Center opened its current exhibition Psychotechnology - a young science finds its application.

The exhibitions of the Adolf-Würth-Zentrum are accessible during the opening times by prior arrangement. As a rule, visitors are guided through the exhibition and thus learn additional exciting information. In all previous exhibitions there were always various historical devices or replicas that you could try out yourself. This gives you an impression of how the pioneers in the field of psychology once researched or tested.
