Pongratz was particularly interested in questions of the history of psychology and clinical psychology. He promoted the latter not only through numerous publications, but also through work on important specialist projects. He initiated research projects on, for example, “ drug abuse ” (1972–1976), “early detection and early support of multiply disabled and visually impaired children” (1978–1981) or “new ways of psychotherapy” (1981–1982). At his institute at the University of Würzburg, he introduced conversational psychotherapy ( Carl Rogers , Reinhard Tausch , Hamburg) in seminars and lectures - a remarkable and forward-looking innovation in the 1960s. With his lectures in Würzburg, he brought a breath of fresh air by strictly following the latest scientific research, which was very much appreciated by the students. In terms of scientific theory, his institute at the University of Würzburg was considered to be the cosmopolitan one that dealt with questions of recent research. From his study “Psychological Conversation” (1972–1975), 13 films with the title “Paths to People” emerged, which document the most diverse therapeutic approaches. Ludwig J. Pongratz was considered to be one of the most prominent representatives of 20th century psychology. Some of his publications are still available in bookshops today.
