Adolf Otto Berger (born July 2, 1837 in Rastenburg ; † January 23, 1910 in Göttingen ) was a royal Prussian lieutenant general and most recently the commander of the 58th Infantry Brigade.

His parents were the Prussian Colonel Johann Berger (1793–1871) and his wife Henriette Scholinus (1804–1881). His brother Adolf Hermann was also a Prussian lieutenant general, his brother Adolph Wilhelm vice admiral of the Imperial Navy.

Life

He got his education first at the Realschule in Kolberg, then at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Cologne and the pedagogy in Halle . After graduating, he went on March 1, 1855 as a fusilier in the 13th Infantry Regiment . There he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on October 16, 1855 and to Seconde-Lieutenant on December 13, 1856. From June 20, 1859 to September 1, 1859 he was assigned as an adjutant in the replacement battalion of the 25th Infantry Brigade. On January 1, 1860, he joined the 13th Landwehr Regiment as an adjutant of the 1st Battalion. On May 1, 1860 he was first placed in the 13th Combined Infantry Regiment and on July 1, 1860 in the 53rd Infantry Regiment. There he was from July 1, 1860 to December 31, 1865 adjutant of the 1st battalion.

During this time he took part in the German-Danish War in 1864. He fought at the Düppeler Schanzen and took part in the transition to Alsen . On May 23, 1864 he was promoted to Premier-Lieutenant and on June 7, 1864 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class with swords .

During the German War of 1866 he fought at Dermbach-Niethartshausen-Zella , Kissingen and Waldaschach , Aschaffenburg , Tauberbischofsheim and Gerchsheims , and also took part in the shelling of Würzburg. After the war he was appointed company commander on July 4, 1868, promoted to captain on September 15, 1869 and employed as a company commander in the 53rd Infantry Regiment.

During the Franco-Prussian War he fought at Colombey and Noisseville as well as the battles at Saarbrücken and Bois de Vaux, and also at the siege of Metz . On September 6, 1870, he received the Iron Cross 2nd Class .

After the war he was aggregated as a surplus major in the 53rd Infantry Regiment on February 19, 1879 and assigned to November 25, 1879. On April 13, 1880 he became a regular staff officer and on December 15, 1881 commander of the 1st battalion. But on March 13, 1884 he was transferred to the 32nd Infantry Regiment, where he was commander of the fusilier battalion. But already on October 16, 1886 he came - promoted to lieutenant colonel - as a regular staff officer in the 132nd Infantry Regiment. On March 22, 1889 he became a colonel and came as a commander in the 86th Infantry Regiment. From there he came on November 17, 1891 as a commander in the 58th Infantry Brigade, at the same time he was appointed major general. On September 14, 1893, he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves and Swords, and on January 20, 1895, the Order of the Crown, 2nd Class with a Star . On July 14, 1895, he was promoted to lieutenant general, before being put up for retirement on August 18, 1895 .

In addition to his military service, Adolf Otto Berger worked as a composer. His best-known work is the Hohenzollern March, which he composed around 1896 as Opus 43 and which was later included in the royal Prussian army march collection .

He died on January 23, 1910 in Göttingen.
