Adolf Riis-Magnussen

Adolf Riis-Magnussen (born June 26, 1883 in Copenhagen , † August 11, 1950 in Nørre Asminderup ) was a Danish organist and composer .

life and work

Riis-Magnussen studied music theory and composition with Carl Nielsen and Orla Rosenhoff as well as piano with Henrik Knudsen and organ with Edgar Henrichsen and church music with Thomas Laub . From 1920 he worked as a composer at St. Thomas Church in Copenhagen.

Riis-Magnussen wrote the Symfonisk Suite in C minor op.3 (1915), several pieces for string orchestra, chamber music, including the string quartet in B minor op.2 (1911), the choral work Columbus for baritone, choir and orchestra op.12 (1922 , revised 1939), sacred and secular songs with piano accompaniment as well as works for mixed choir and male choir. He was best known as a song composer. Here he showed himself not as an innovator, but as a composer in the tradition of Danish Romanticism.
