Adolf Schlieper senior

Adolf Schlieper (born July 20, 1825 in Elberfeld (today a district of Wuppertal ); † November 13, 1887 there ) was a German chemist and industrialist .

Schlieper's father was a textile manufacturer and owned a calico printing shop. After studying chemistry at the University of Berlin and in Gießen, among others with Justus von Liebig , Schlieper published several articles in Liebig's journal. Schlieper then completed his military service and then returned to his father to join his company. He moved to Lowell , Massachusetts, then the center of the dyeing industry in North America , in the late 1840s . With the experience of his internship abroad, he returned to Elberfeld in 1851 and took over his father's company. Schlieper developed new printing processes and had them patented. Under his leadership, his father's company developed into one of the most important textile printing companies. In 1889 his son Adolf Schlieper junior joined the company.
