Adolf Vančura (also: Vancura) (born June 11, 1900 in Vienna ; † January 9, 1967 ibid) was an Austrian composer , conductor , pianist and organist , as well as long-time conductor of the music band of the Wiener Elektrizitätswerke.

Life

He came from a Viennese Czech family. His musical talent showed early, but he had to break off his training at the Vienna Conservatory for financial reasons. He found work with the municipality of Vienna, where he was able to play music with the municipal electricity company as part of the company band. He consciously worked on his further musical education, composed diligently and was soon appreciated as a conductor, pianist and organist. As the choir conductor of the "Höhenklang" association, he also wrote and arranged choral music. For more than 20 years he was the conductor of the music band of the Elektrizitätswerke, with whom he was able to celebrate numerous successes with his own and other compositions. A high point of his career was conducting the concert of his band on the occasion of the opening of the Wiener Festwochen 1954. His wife Leopoldine nee. Krunert was a concert singer, sang classical songs and operetta music and was also an interpreter of his compositions. His brother Veno Vančura was also musically gifted and worked as an orchestral musician. The following list contains many of his compositions, among which the “Freudenauer Galopp” is probably one of the best known. He also made a name for himself as an arranger, especially for wind music . One of his choir arrangements is his popular “Heiteres Wander”, a joyful wandering song potpourrie for mixed choir and piano. Among his around 250 compositions for choir, orchestra, chamber music and organ are 50 works for wind orchestra. These works in particular are said to be indicative of the typically Austrian character of his music.
