Adolf Wüstemann

Adolf Karl Friedrich Gustav Wüstemann (born December 30, 1901 in Kassel ; † January 22, 1966 there ) was a German Protestant clergyman and from 1945 to 1962 Bishop of the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck .

Life

Wüstemann did a bank apprenticeship and worked in the Kassel branch of Dresdner Bank before he decided to start studying theology in 1926. He studied at the Bethel Theological School , the University of Berlin and, for the longest time, at the University of Marburg , where he was primarily influenced by Rudolf Bultmann and Hans von Soden . After the 2nd Theological examination, he was in the on March 24, 1934 Martin Church in Kassel ordained . He then became a pastor at the Advent Church in Kassel- Wehlheiden and was involved in the church fight on the side of the Confessing Church . In autumn 1943 he joined the regional church office of the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck in Kassel as a "clergyman auxiliary worker" . When at the “emergency synod” of the church in September 1945 in Treysa (today Schwalmstadt ) the office of bishop was newly created and linked to the leadership of the regional church office, Wüstemann was unanimously elected to this office. During his term of office, the reorganization of the canonical structures fell, but also the opening of the rectory for women and the conclusion of a state treaty with the state of Hesse . At the end of 1962 he resigned prematurely for health reasons.

The Philipps University of Marburg awarded Wüstemann an honorary theological doctorate in 1951 .
