Joseph Marin Adolphe Noël des Vergers (born June 2, 1805 in Paris , † January 2, 1867 in Nice ) was a French orientalist , archaeologist and epigraphist .

life and work

Noël Des Vergers, from an old Normandy family and son of a member of the Chamber of Deputies and President of the Chamber of Commerce , studied Oriental languages, history and geography in Paris. Its first publication in 1837 was an annotated edition with translation of Abulfeda's life of Muhammad . He became a member of the Council of the Société asiatique and Secretary General of the Société geographique and published in the bodies of these academic societies. In 1841 he published an edition of the history of North Africa under the Aghlabids by Abd-ar-Rahman Ibn-Muhammad Ibn-Haldun.

Noël des Vergers traveled to Naples, Sicily, Greece and the Orient. With the leading inscription researcher of his time, Count Bartolomeo Borghesi , Noël des Vergers studied epigraphy and specialized in this field. Finally, not least because of the proximity to San Marino , the residence of Count Borghesi, he settled in a magnificent 17th century villa in San Lorenzo in Correggiano near Rimini in 1843 , which he made into an important meeting place for scientists and artists .

He himself worked there mainly as an archaeologist and did research on the Etruscans . In 1857 he and Alessandro François discovered a family grave richly decorated with frescoes in Vulci , the so-called Tomba François . He published his research and finds in 1864 in a two-volume work on the Etruscans, which was provided with a luxurious ribbon to illustrate the finds.

For the inscription catalog Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum he coordinated work on the Latin inscriptions in France. In 1860 he became a member of an imperial commission for the publication of all of Borghesi's works.

As editor he worked on Nouvelle Revue encyclopédique and the Athenaeum français ; archaeological essays appeared in the Annales de l'institut archéologique . For the Encyclopédie moderne he contributed numerous articles on Roman antiquity and on oriental languages; for the Nouvelle Biographie générale he wrote the résumés of the most important Roman emperors. His reflections on Marcus Aurelius were also published separately in 1860.

In 1845 he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor . From 1852 was a corresponding member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres .
