The Adomi Bridge ( English : Adomi Bridge , formerly Volta Bridge ) is a road bridge over the Volta in Ghana . It stands about 10 km below the Akosombo Dam, which dams the Volta Reservoir , near the district capital Atimpoku in the Asuogyaman District in the Eastern Region . It is part of the Tema-Jasikan Road (N2), which connects Accra via Tema to the parts of the country east of the Volta reservoir, making it one of the most important transport links between the two sides of the Volta.

The Adomi Bridge has two lanes and two walkways. It is the longest bridge in the country with a span of 245.36 m (805 ft) and an overall length of 336 m.

The two articulated steel - sheet bridge with bottom track has an approximately 60 m high arc of a truss structure , from which the slab with ropes is suspended.

Construction of the bridge, planned by Freeman, Fox & Partners in collaboration with Sir William Halcrow and Partners, began before Ghana's independence in 1956 under British colonial rule. It was completed in 1957 after the declaration of independence and opened by Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah .

The bridge was originally designed for loads that were significantly greater than required by British standards . Nevertheless, in 2008, after more than 50 years, there were some fatigue fractures . An in-depth investigation was carried out in 2011, whereupon the Ghana Highway Authority commissioned a comprehensive renovation of the collapsing bridge with the help of an Austrian loan of € 12.9 million, in which the road deck and the suspension cables are to be completely renewed.

According to initial information, the 30-month renovation measures should begin in 2012 and were finally announced for June 2013. The bridge had to be completely closed. After the work was completed, the bridge was reopened on December 19, 2015 by President John Dramani Mahama .
