Adriaen Pauw (born January 13, 1516 in Gouda , † October 8, 1578 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch businessman and politician.

Life

Adriaen, descending from the Pauw family, was the son of Reinier Pauw and Aerlanda Fransdr. He moved to Amsterdam and married Anna Jacob Lucasdr van Persijn (1520–1586); the eminent regent Reinier Pauw was his son. Adriaen was a merchant and merchant in wool and worked as an agent for the Danish king. Due to his extensive activities, he had access to all ports on the Baltic Sea. In 1566 he was one of the six senior captains of the Amsterdam Civil Guard . The following year, Adriaen, along with Lenaert Jansz de Graeff and Cornelis Boelens, was one of the opponents of Charles de Brimeu's planned invasion of the city of Amsterdam. Since he was one of the Protestant and anti-Spanish heads of Amsterdam, he fled to Emden after the arrival of the Duke of Alba in 1568 and later to Hamburg . After the Alteratie of Amsterdam in 1578 Adriaen returned to Amsterdam; there he was immediately accepted as a lay judge (Dutch: schepen ) and vroedschap in the Amsterdam city government . In the same year he was elected as the first new mayor together with Diederik Jansz Graeff . In the same year Adriaen renewed the municipal wholesale trade in oil, wool, coal, etc.
