Adrian Sobaru

Adrian Sobaru (born August 16, 1968 ) gained notoriety on December 23, 2010 when, during a speech by Prime Minister Emil Boc , he rushed from a balcony of the visitors' gallery of the plenary hall of the Romanian Parliament into the meeting room.

The electrician employed by the Romanian state television Televiziunea Română as a lighting technician in the parliament building wanted to protest against the government's austerity measures (→ sovereign debt crisis in the euro area ), which meant a cut in support for his 15-year-old son, who suffers from autism . Sobaru had written on his T-shirt with the words “You mowed us down. You destroyed the future of our children. You can take money and life from us, but not our freedom. ”(“ Ne-ați ciuruit !!! Ne-ați vîndut și ne ați trădat. Ne-ați ucis viitorul copiilor. Ne puteți lua viața și bani dar nu LIBERTATEA !! ! ”) After the Prime Minister started his speech, Sobaru climbed onto the balustrade and shouted“ This is for you, Boc! You stole the children's money ”(“ Pentru tine Boc! Aţi luat banii copiilor! ”). He had only planned to speak a few words on the balcony and not jump, but succumbed to a loss of control and fell with his arms outstretched. He fell seven meters and survived the fall with broken bones.

Sobaru later took part in demonstrations against the government's austerity measures and is considered the "father of the Romanian protest movement".

A report by Barbara Supp about the incident was nominated for the German Reporter Award 2011.
