Stephen "Steve" Norman Howey (born October 26, 1971 in Sunderland ) is a former English football player . Between 1994 and 1996 he played four international matches for England and was part of the English squad for the 1996 European Football Championship in his own country.

Career

Newcastle United (1989-2000)

Steve Howey made his debut on May 13, 1989 at the age of 17 for Newcastle United in the Football League First Division 1988/89 . His team rose shortly afterwards from bottom of the table in the second division. After he remained in the following season without league use, Howey was used by coach Jim Smith 1990/91 in eleven league games. The defender (41 games / 2 goals) earned a regular place in the 1992/93 season, when Newcastle returned to the first division after four years of second-rate status by winning the second division championship. In the promotion team supervised by Kevin Keegan , he played in the Premier League 1993/94 only fourteen games and ended the season in third place in the table. In the 1994/95 UEFA Cup , the team from north-east England failed in the second round at Athletic Bilbao . The team around David Ginola , Rob Lee , Les Ferdinand and Steve Howey (28 games / 1 goal) achieved a further increase in the league in the 1995/96 Premier League by winning the runner-up behind Manchester United. The club was also able to improve its performance in the European Cup and made it to the quarter-finals of the 1996/97 UEFA Cup before losing to AS Monaco . In addition, United confirmed the previous year's good performance by winning the runner-up in the Premier League again in 1996/97 . The team around the top scorer Alan Shearer (25 league goals), who came from Blackburn before the season, qualified for the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League and narrowly beat Croatia Zagreb. In the group stage, Newcastle failed after a 3-2 opening win against FC Barcelona as third in the table and missed the quarter-finals. A significantly worse performance in the Premier League was compensated for by moving into the final of the FA Cup 1997/98 . The final game was lost by Steve Howey, who played 90 minutes, with his team 0-2 against Arsenal . A year later Newcastle moved into the FA Cup final again and lost 2-0 to Manchester United without the unused Howey.

Manchester City (2000-2003)

After Steve Howey was less and less used in Newcastle, he moved to the Premier League promoted Manchester City on August 11, 2000 for £ 2,000,000 . Even his six hits in thirty-six league games could not prevent City from relegating to the second division after just one year in the 2000/01 Premier League . There Manchester won the championship in 2001/02 superior and returned to the Premier League in 2002/03 . Howey played in his second first division season with City twenty-four league games (two goals) and achieved relegation with the promoted team in ninth place.

On June 6, 2003, the 31-year-old moved to Leicester City for £ 200,000 and signed to Bolton Wanderers on January 29, 2004 . With his new team he finished the Premier League 2003/04 in eighth place, but was only used in three league games. After further short-term engagements with the MLS club New England Revolution and Hartlepool United , Steve Howey ended his career in the summer of 2005.

English national team (1994-1996)

Steve Howey made his debut on November 16, 1994 with a 1-0 home win in a friendly against Nigeria in the English national team. After three more appearances in friendly matches, the 24-year-old was appointed to the English EM squad by national coach Terry Venables . The defender who was left without action failed with England in the home tournament only in the semi-finals against Germany.
