biography

He came from a noble family who immigrated from Lombardy in the Middle Ages ; his father Maurice de Courten was a leading politician in the canton of Valais . From him Adrien de Courten inherited the title of count and large estates. From 1826 to 1830 he was an officer in the French service. He served as President of the Zehnden of Sierre, later as Prefect of the District of Sierre . He was also mayor and mayor of Sierre.

As a representative of the Catholic-conservative elite, de Courten fought against the radical liberals . He became a member of the War Council in 1843 and was one of the military leaders of the "Old Switzerland", an organization that violently attacked the radicals and drove them into exile after their victory in the battle on Trento on May 21, 1844. From 1844 to 1847, during the time of the Sonderbund , de Courten was the highest ambassador of the Valais to the Diet . As a lieutenant colonel , he commanded the Valais Center Brigade during the Sonderbund War in 1847 . In 1857 he was elected to the Valais Grand Council , to which he belonged until 1869. He ran successfully in the National Council elections in 1857 ; until 1863 he represented the constituency of Central Valais , then for another three years the constituency of Upper Valais .
