history

Adtran was founded in 1985 by Mark C. Smith and Lonnie McMillian, and began operations in 1986.

The AT&T divestiture restrictions of the Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs) enabled market access for companies like Adtran to sell network equipment for the seven RBOCs as well as to other independent telecommunications companies.

In December 2011, Adtran announced that it wanted to acquire the broadband division from Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) , which was ailing at the time . The purchase was completed on March 6, 2012. Since then, Munich , Berlin and Greifswald have been part of the Adtran locations in Germany (partly at the NSN locations).
