Aecidium mesadeniae is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the daisy family Cacalia . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It is common in the United States . Since only its secondary crop form is knownso far, it is classified in the genus Aecidium .

features

Macroscopic features

Aecidium mesadeniae can only be recognized with the naked eye by the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Aecidium mesadeniae grows as with all Aecidium intercellular types, and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Its spermogonia grow on the upper side in small groups on the host leaves. The aecia of the species growing underneath the leaves are light yellowish, gregarious and cup-shaped. Their hyaline aecidiospores are 15–19 × 12–16 µm in size, ellipsoidal to spherical and warty. The uredia of the mushroom are not known, and it is possible that they are not developed. The Telien the type have not been observed to date.

distribution

The known distribution area of Aecidium mesadeniae extends from Wisconsin to Missouri .

ecology

The host plants of Aecidium mesadeniae are various Cacalia atriplicifolia and C. reniformis . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a micro- or macrocyclical development cycle with spermogonia, aecia, possibly also uredia and telia. Whether she is going through a change of host cannot be determined due to the lack of telien and uredien.
