The Aegean Captain was an oil tanker that lost around 20,000 tons of crude oil after a collision in July 1979.

history

The VLCC tanker was laid down on April 20, 1967 with hull number 4126 at the Hitachi Zosen shipyard in Sakai, Japan, launched as Marisa on September 20, 1967 and sent to the client, Shell Tankers in London, delivered. In 1973 the ship was transferred, without renaming, to the Curacaosche Scheepvaart Maatschappij shipping company in Willemstad, which was part of the Shell Group. The Marisa belonged to the Shell M-class , which had over 22 units , had a loading capacity of around 210,000 metric tons and was 325 m long. In 1977 the ship was sold to a Greek shipping company and registered as an Agean Captain for the Quadrant Shipping Corporation in Monrovia .

accident

In July 1979 the ship was on a voyage from Bonaire to Singapore with a cargo of around 200,000 tons of crude oil . On July 19, 1979, the tanker collided in a storm off Tobago at position φ: 11.05 ° N; λ: 061.50 ° W with the tanker Atlantic Empress , which sank on August 3, 1979. The tug Oceanic was able to extinguish the fire on the bow of the ship. The ship lost about 10% of its cargo, but was towed to Curaçao , where the rest of the oil cargo was pumped out. The Agean Captain was not repaired after the collision, but scrapped in Kaohsiung on March 26, 1980 .
