The genus Aegithalos is one of three genera from the family of tailed tits ( Aegithalidae), which is closely related to the actual tits (Paridae) and the bag titmouse (Remizidae). It includes six types.

All six species are native to Eurasia. The tailed tit ( Aegithalos caudatus ) is widespread throughout the Palearctic, but is absent in the Himalayas . Four of the other species are native there. The black tailed tit is endemic to central China .

Ae. iouschistos and Ae. niveogularis presumably form a super species . With Ae. concinnus and Ae. leucogenys they are sometimes grouped together to form the subgenus or genus Aegithaliscus due to their relatively short tail .
