Aenne Ley

Aenne Ley , b. Strässer (born September 26, 1912 in Cologne , † April 15, 2010 in Mainz ) was a German politician ( FDP ).

Life and work

After attending commercial school and an apprenticeship as a clerk, Aenne Ley held managerial positions in industry and trade. She was the mother of a son. Her political career began in 1961, initially as an honorary member of the non-partisan civic women's work in the German Women's Ring . Aenne Ley took over the chairmanship of this organization in Mainz for around ten years. In the same year she joined the FDP. In 1969 she entered the Mainz City Council for this party for the first time .

In March 1970 Aenne Ley became a member of the Mainz-Innenstadt Local Advisory Board, which still existed until 1989. In 1974 she became the first head of Mainz, responsible for downtown Mainz . She was appointed deputy group leader of her party in the city council and devoted herself particularly to the work in the building committee, the property committee, the committee for questions of old town renovation , the audit committee and the subcommittee for questions of environmental protection. She was also involved in founding Pro Familia in Mainz.

On July 2, 1979, the long-standing city councilor was elected honorary alderman as a member of the city council under Mayor Jockel Fuchs . Until she left office at the end of August 1984, she was responsible for environmental protection and social security. Aenne Ley was the liaison to the Bundeswehr services ( military area command ) and contact person for matters relating to the stationing forces (1st Brigade of the 8th US Infantry Division ). In this role she promoted German-American understanding.

Effect in Mainz politics

Ley was a pioneer of the women's movement and the development of the environmental protection movement in Mainz politics in the 1970s. The establishment of the pedestrian zones, the development of Anna-Seghers-Platz and the overbuilding of the railway tracks go back to Aenne Ley and are still significant enrichments for Mainz today.
