Aeródromo de Rozas is an airfield in the municipality of Castro de Rey in the province of Lugo in Galicia .
The airfield is located around 14 kilometers northeast of the city of Lugo .
history
The airfield was planned and built by the German Air Force during World War II in the late 1930s with three hangars of considerable size and barracks with outbuildings. The German Air Force flew regular transport flights with Junkers Ju-52s to bring personnel and material from Germany to Rozas. The total area of the airfield is around 300 hectares. A sun radio beacon was also installed on the site .
The square was opened on June 4, 1943. The Air Force High Command intends to test and further develop the radio equipment Erika (radio beacon) and the X procedure on the Aeródromo de Rozas on this site . The German Research Institute for Aviation should also carry out the test flights for the new X night flight system there.
The dictator Franco made unfulfillable demands for the delivery of military and civilian goods to Hitler , who, however, was no longer ready to meet the demands, so the Spanish military took over the airfield in June 1944 and units of the Spanish air forces were housed there.
Civil use
In 1949, the airport became the central airport of Galicia and scheduled flights were operated until the completion of the Aeropuerto de Santiago de Compostela in 1952.
In 1953, the Spanish Air Force Ejército del Aire decided to close the airfield and the dismantling of the facilities began. The first hangar was dismantled in 1958 and taken to the military base in Palma de Mallorca and another hangar was reinstalled in 1959 at the Cuatro Vientos air base (Madrid). However, the third and last was transferred for use to the newly established Royal Aero Club of Lugo through the efforts of the then Mayor Ramiro Rueda Fernández . The private operator of the airfield is Aeronáuticas Lucenses SL
The entire large area is still owned by the Ministerio de Defensa de España and is managed by the Ejército del Aire.
future
In January 2014, press reports announced that the Spanish Ministry of Defense was negotiating with the management of what was then Cassidian Air Systems , now part of Airbus Defense and Space , to convert Rozas airfield into a base for unmanned aircraft for military purposes. The Alternative Galega de Esquerda (AGE) party has submitted a request to the Spanish parliament. The state agency for aviation safety Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea recently submitted a report to the ministry and approved the project as a reference center for technology research on unmanned aerial vehicles .
