history

Aero Commander 100

The company was founded in 1944 in Culver City , California by former Douglas Aircraft Company employees to design and manufacture a light twin-engine transport aircraft , the Aero Commander 500 .

After several investors from Oklahoma came on board to secure the completion of the development and approval by the Civil Aeronautics Administration financially, the company changed its name to Aero Design and Engineering Company in September 1950 and settled near Oklahoma City , which is today Wiley Post Airport . The first Aero Commander 520 was completed in August 1951. The one with a pressurized cabin provided 720 Alti-Cruiser was introduced to the market in 1958.

Rockwell International took over the company in October 1958 and continued to run it as a subsidiary. In the years that followed, aircraft were also marketed as parts of the Aero Commander range that had been developed by other companies.

The Twin Commander was introduced in 1960 and was produced until 1984.

The twin-engine 1121 Jet Commander was also developed , for which the manufacturing rights were sold to Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), which manufactured it under the name Westwind .

Ag Commander was a trade name used by Aero Commander for their range of agricultural aircraft. Two stand-alone aircraft were marketed under this designation: CallAir A-9 , sold as the Ag Commander A-9 and B-9 , and the Ayres Thrush (also known as the Snow S-2 ), sold as the Ag Commander S-2 . Both aircraft were originally products of smaller manufacturers that were bought by Aero Commander. The trade name Ag Commander disappeared in 1970 with the dissolution of the Aero Commander division by Rockwell.
