François Dosse (born September 21, 1950 ) is a French historian , philosopher and biographer . His main interests are the history of ideas , biography research and intellectual research. He is Professor of Contemporary History at the Institut Universitaire de Formation des Maîtres (IUFM) at the University of Paris XII in Créteil , and teaches at the IEP de Paris .

His mother is the well-known French painter Tonia Cariffa.

After Dosse had dealt with the Annales School in his dissertation in 1983 , his interest turned to structuralism . In two volumes, published in 1991 and 1992 and subsequently translated into several languages, he traced the history of French structuralism and post-structuralism . He also wrote a biography of the well-known French philosopher Paul Ricœur ( Paul Ricœur. Les sens d'une vie ), which appeared in 1997 and has since been considered a standard work on Ricoeur's life. Dosse published another biography in 2002 on the French historian and cultural philosopher Michel de Certeau .

In 2007 he published his double biography on the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze and the psychoanalyst Félix Guattari ( Gilles Deleuze et Félix Guattari, biographie croisée ), in which he advocated giving Guattari the place it deserved next to Deleuze in the history of ideas, in which previously there was only room for Seemed to be Deleuze. In 2011 Dosse published a biography on the French historian Pierre Nora . In 2014 he published the first biography of the Greco-French philosopher and psychoanalyst Cornelius Castoriadis .

He is one of the founders of the interdisciplinary French magazine EspacesTemps .

François Dosse was an important academic teacher of Emmanuel Macron , whose enthusiasm for discussion and thinking in contexts sticks in his memory.
