Aeroplan is a customer loyalty program . It belongs to the Canadian company Aimia , headquartered in Montreal .
As a service provider, the company operates a customer loyalty program. The program was initially started by the Canadian company Air Canada in July 1984. The company is headed by Rupert Duchesne . Approximately 5 million members are registered in this program. With the Aeroplan cards you can collect or redeem status points in cooperating shops. Including at Esso , Home Hardware , Sobeys , Thrifty Foods and others. Aeroplan is also accepted by Air Creebec , Canadian North , Calm Air , and First Air . Many Aeroplan members collect status points with their credit cards. Credit cards were initially issued by CIBC and Diners Club / enRoute. These were later issued by AMEX Bank of Canada and VISA when Diners Club withdrew from the program. In 2009 over 2.1 million awards were distributed, including more than 1.5 million flights, with Air Canada and Star Alliance partners, to over 1000 destinations worldwide. The company is represented in several countries including Great Britain, Chile, Qatar and Italy.

Air Canada's program was introduced in 1984 and was under their full control until 2002. In 2002 the company was restructured, with Air Canada reducing its stake in the company. In June 2005, ACE Aviation Hold sold 12.5% of its stake. On December 20, 2007, Aeroplan Income Fund took over the Loyalty Management Group, which is responsible for the Nectar loyalty card in the UK . In 2008 Air Canada sold the remaining stake in the company. In June 2008 the company went public and renamed Groupe Aeroplan Inc.

Status points
For air travel with Air Canada within Canada and between Canada and the United States (including Hawaii) you receive 25% per mile in Tango Class (booking class). 100% in the Tango Plus and Executive Class (lowest) and 150% for the Executive Class Flexible.
For air travel outside Canada and the United States, the following applies: 100% mile in the Tango Plus booking class, 125% in the Executive Class (Lowest) and 150% in the Executive Class Flexible booking class.
