Afro-Asian Cup for national teams

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Afro-Asian Cup for National Teams was an intercontinental football competition for national teams between the continental champions of Africa and Asia, which was held irregularly between 1978 and 2007. Participants for Africa were the current African football champions and for Asia, the current winners of the Asian championship or winners of the Asian football games alternately . The competition was the counterpart at national team level to the Afro-Asian Cup at club level. As a rule, the competition was decided in a two-way leg, three times also in one game, and held in the following year of the qualifying competitions. Along with the Artemio Franchi Cup, it is considered to be one of the forerunners of the King Fahd Cup and later the FIFA Confederations Cup . After this competition, which encompasses all continents, became more and more important. Due to disputes between the football associations in Africa and Asia over the voting of the Asian representatives in favor of the 2006 World Cup in Germany, it was no longer played or canceled at the beginning of the millennium. The Asian side tried to create a replacement for national teams with the Asia-Oceania Cup, which was first played in 2001 . The 2007 edition was a one-time attempt to revive the competition.
