The Agano ( Japanese 阿 賀 野 川 , -gawa , in Fukushima also Aga ( 阿賀川 , -gawa ) or Ōkawa ( 大川 )) is a river in Japan .

It flows from the Fukushima Prefecture in the Niigata Prefecture . It is 210 km long and has a catchment area of ​​7710 km².

The source of the river is on Mount Arakai on the border of the Fukushima and Tochigi prefectures . It flows north and is fed by the Nippashi ( 日 橋 川 , -gawa ) from Lake Inawashiro and then from the Tadami in the Aizu Basin . Then it turns west and falls into the Sea of ​​Japan . At the mouth it has the highest flow rate of all Japanese rivers with 451 m³ / s.

In the 1960s, the Shōwa Denkō company polluted the river with mercury , causing Niigata Minamata Disease (Niigata Minamata Disease ( 新潟 水 俣 病 , Niigata Minamata-byō ), also known as the second Minamata Disease ( 第二 水 俣 病 , Dai-ni Minamata-byō ) called).
