description

Agave gypsophila grows solitary and forms open rosettes. The gray to bluish, linear to lanceolate, variably twisted, slightly roughened leaves are 45 to 110 cm long and 7 to 12 cm wide. The differently arranged wart-like leaf margins are serrated irregularly. The brown end thorn is up to 1 cm long.

The paniculate straight to curved inflorescence becomes 2 to 3 m high. The yellow to orange flowers are 30 to 35 mm long, appear on the upper part of the inflorescence and form on loosely arranged, variable branches. The broad, funnel-shaped flower tube is 4 to 5 mm long.

The flowering period extends from March to May.

Systematics and distribution

Agave gypsophila is widespread in Mexico in the states of Jalisco and Guerrero on dry gypsum and limestone slopes, in woodlands from 300 to 1000 m altitude.

The first description by Howard Scott Gentry was published in 1982.

Agave gypsophila is a member of the Marmoratae group and is isolated in the Colima and Acapulco regions near the Pacific coast on gypsum and limestone slopes in Mexico. The variably twisted gray to bluish, very brittle leaves are characteristic. The wart-like leaf margins are serrated. Specimens can be found in California at Ruth Bancroft Garden and El Cajon.
