geography

Avtepe is located on the Karpas peninsula, on the road to Kaleburnu / Galinoporni . The village is seven kilometers southeast of Yialousa / Yeni Erenköy and three kilometers northeast of Vothylakas / Derince .

history

During the Ottoman period (1570 / 71-1878) population censuses were carried out for the purpose of tax collection. Therefore, only the (male) heads of household were counted. In Avtepe there were exactly 30 men in 1831, all of whom were considered Turks.

When the British took over in 1878, their census in 1891 resulted in 268 Turkish and three Greek residents. However, that number fell to just 180 within ten years. In the following censuses, the population fluctuated between 207 (1911) and 199 (1921), whereas in 1931 it was 206. After all, the village numbered eight Greeks again at that time. While their share fell to a single one by 1946, the number of Turkish villagers rose to 240, and in 1960 even to 333. Since then, no Greeks have lived in the village. In 1958 and 1964 the village took in Turkish refugees, but in 1970 only the original residents lived in Avtepe, from whom no one had to flee.

Avtepe was therefore already inhabited by Cypriot Turks before 1974, i.e. before the Turkish occupation ; In 1973 there were 333. Between 1964 and 1974, at the time of the Turkish administration of Cyprus , it was administratively part of the Turkish enclave Mehmetçik, but did not accept refugees from other villages. The 1960 census counted 333 Cypriot Turks, compared to 305 in 1978.

The younger residents of the village migrated to the larger towns, so that the population has shrunk drastically since then. In 2006 there were only 151 residents, in 2011 there were only 119.
