Agius (poet)
Agius was a monk in Corvey Monastery and a Middle Latin poet of the 9th century .
Around 876 Agius wrote a vita for the abbess Hathumod von Gandersheim . In the older research it was assumed that Agius was a brother of the abbess and thus the son of the Saxon count Liudolf . This has now been refuted. Nevertheless, as a clergyman, Agius had a close relationship with Gandersheim, so that his vita is largely reliable. At the same time, it was called one of the most beautiful vites of the Middle Ages because of its simplicity. This work consists of a prose section and a lament for the dead of 359 distiches in dialogue form. In this Agius appears alongside the Gandersheim convent. Furthermore, Agius wrote other poems. His seven poems De computo , written in hexameters , were dedicated to the Bishop of Hamburg-Bremen Rimbert . He dedicated the third version to Queen Liutgard . He was probably not identical to the Poeta Saxo .
