Agnes Avagyan (born April 1, 1980 in Yerevan ) is an Armenian cartoonist and illustrator. She has lived in Switzerland since 2006 and performs full-time as a live caricaturist / quick draftswoman . Together with her husband she publishes Bible educational games.

Life

Family and studies

Agnes' ancestors owned a silk factory in Turkey. While fleeing the Armenian genocide in 1915, they had to leave everything behind and narrowly escaped to Greece on a small boat. Agnes great-grandfather later traveled back to Armenia. Agnes' grandfather was a civil engineer, her mother an engineer and the father a physicist.

Yerevan, Ara Hovsepyan's studio, 1993–1994

Agnes Avagyan was born on April 1, 1980 in Yerevan. At that time, Armenia was still part of the Soviet Union. As a child, Agnes first attended a Russian school and was an enthusiastic member of the pioneering organization Vladimir Ilyich Lenin . After Armenia declared independence in 1991, the country suffered a dramatic decade (Dark Years in Armenia). Agne's family was also hit by blows of fate. The essentials of life were missing, such as electricity, heating and food. In drawing and her family, however, Agnes found the strength to survive these dark years surprisingly carefree. When the Armenian Apostolic Church returned from its oppression, Agnes became involved as a member of the youth congregation.

After living conditions in Armenia began to improve noticeably in 2000, Agnes was able to develop as an artist. After extensive training, Agnes graduated from the P. Terlemezyan Art School and from the Yerevan State Academy of Fine Arts.

  • 1991–1994, art school “A. Hovsepyan ”, certificate
  • 1992–1994, “Kojoyan” Art School, certificate
  • 1995–1996, Art School of the Yerevan Art Gallery, certificate
  • 1996–1997, drawing studio "Samuel-Manvel", certificate
  • 1994–1999, art school according to P. Terlemezyan, Jerevan, diploma
  • 2000–2005, State Academy of Fine Arts, Yerevan, diploma

Note: When Agnes held a solo exhibition in St. Petersburg in 1996 , the world-famous St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts offered her a place to study on a scholarship, which the family sometimes had to refuse for financial reasons.

Work activity

Agnes, political cartoon: Forward !, 2001
  • From 1998 to 2002 Agnes worked as a cartoonist for “ Hayastani Hanrapetutyun ”, the national daily newspaper.
  • From 2001 to 2006 Agnes was employed as a cartoonist for the “ArmeniaNow.com” internet journal.

Agnes had worked with numerous national and international magazines and newspapers and a number of other organizations such as the UNDP and ICRC and illustrated a large number of children's books.

Agnes has lived in Switzerland since 2006. In addition to her work as a show artist and quick draftsman (e.g. for company events, business lunches, weddings, birthdays), she works on independent productions with her playwright husband Dave Büttler. In addition to her work, Agnes appears regularly at church events and for non-profit organizations.

Two-handed show

Agne's talent goes beyond the usual limits: she can draw synchronously and independently of one another with both hands, and for this extraordinary ability she received the title of “Diva” in the Russian Book of Records. TV stations and newspapers from Armenia, Russia, England, France, Lebanon, USA, Canada and the UAE reported on their two-hand show.
